The Roger King Center for Asian Family Business and Family Office successfully conducted the new module of its signature program, “HKUST Global Family Leader Succession Program: Family Succession: Failure and Lesson” on April 24-26, 2025.

The exclusive three-day program on family succession failure cases brought together multi-generational family members from various regions, including Hong Kong, Mainland China, South Korea, the Middle East, Germany etc. The Center’s Senior Advisor, Prof. Roger King, and Director, Prof. Winnie Peng provided their original research and case studies that addressed the practical succession issues faced by Asian family businesses. The Center was also fortunate to invite family members from legendary families to share their extremely valuable lessons, along with top scholars and experts from Japan, Europe and Mainland China. Global family participants also exchanged their own experiences during the three-day training period.

The program received overwhelmingly high ratings and positive feedback from participants. A second-generation member of a Hong Kong family and Managing Director of a Single Family Office highlighted, “The program was exceptional. Family members from diverse backgrounds shared their personal challenges and emotional journeys related to succession, leaving a profound impact. It offered valuable insights and warnings for participants to reflect on their own family succession paths. The program's practical case studies encouraged attendees to consider potential issues from various perspectives. I highly recommend attending with two generations for meaningful joint discussions.”

A founder of a Mainland family business stated, “This was my first experience with such a program, and I found it to be incredibly beneficial. I learned from vivid real-life cases and engaged in discussions about inheritance plans, where diverse perspectives emerged. The program was thoughtfully designed and truly rewarding, providing me with insights that I can apply to my own business and family dynamics.”

A second-generation member of a German family stated, "I was honored to learn from leading business figures and to connect with fellow participants from Hong Kong, Mainland China, Japan and beyond. This program has been invaluable in helping me understand the strategic importance of family in succession planning and managing wealth across generations."

The Center will continue to offer different modules covering various topics in family businesses and family offices.
